Each year, Pine Castle Pioneer Days proudly showcases a local artist whose work reflects our area’s unique culture and heritage. In 2017, we were very proud to have Claudia Thomas as our signature artist! Her original depiction of our venerable Fort Gatlin graced the cover of the 2017 magazine, promotional posters, and t-shirts.Claudia has an art degree from Rollins College in Winter Park. While there, she had the opportunity to study art history in Italy for four weeks. Working for Delta Airlines allowed her to visit many galleries and studios that have inspired her work, including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; Norman Rockwell’s studio in Arlington, Vermont; The MuseeD'Orseyand Louvre in Paris, France; the home and gardens of Claude Monet in Giverny, France; The National Gallery in London, England; and the Egyptian Museum and Archives in Cairo, Egypt.She has studied landscape and pleinair painting with nationally known artists Tom Sadlerin Orlando; Larry Moorein Avon Park; Greg Kreutzin Maitland;and Stewart ShilsMaster Class in Cross Village, Michigan.Her work is represented in the books 100 Southern Artists and Artists Homes and Studios.Claudia paints in oil on canvas, canvas board, or Masonite and has a realistic impressionistic style. She is inspired by the natural effects of sunlight in the landscape and works quickly to capture the fleeting shadows and subtly changing colors throughout the day. She paints weekly with The Florida Painters. Her portrayals of the landscape creates a reverence for the symmetry and beauty of nature.Her works have been entered in juried competitions and displayed in themed shows and galleries. Locally, she has exhibited at the University Club in Winter Park, The Gallery at Avalon Island, LeuGardens Gallery, The Board of County Commissioners Chambers in Orlando, Art Affair Gallery in Sanford, Orlando City Arts Factory, Osceola Center for The Arts, Winter Garden, The Art House of Casselberry, Florida Hospital at Altamonte, 1st Thursday at Orlando Museum of Art, Winter Park Library, Maitland Library, Harris House in New Smyrna Beach, Four Arts Museum in Palm Beach, Heritage Center and Welcome Center of Winter Park, Casa Feliz, Florida Frame House Gallery, Mount Dora Center for the Arts, Museum of Florida Art and Culture in Avon Park, Cornell Art Museum in Delray, and RavaliasItalian Restaurant in Lake Mary.
